Of course, as we learn later, Balan’s gumshoe in Kahaani is not pregnant but, like Jake Gittes, wounded. This “wound” is also a source of tremendous empowerment—a reserve from which the protagonist draws much power, which she in turn (in the final analysis) has directed at subverting a world that throws up barriers at every turn in this twisty thriller. When summed up in this fashion, one could probably view Sujoy Ghosh’s film as a kind of feminist-noir that really uses some pointedly religious imagery—ably and sometimes overwhelmingly provided by a festive Kolkata during Durga puja—to support its overall project. It mostly succeeds, even if the final reveal is something of a Shyamalanesque rug-pulling, which I’m not a great fan of mostly because it comes off as a bit of a tonal shift that’s not easy to negotiate for any filmmaker.
