About the Author
Thanhha Lai was born in Vietnam in and fled from the Vietnam war after the fall of Saigon in She landed in the United States in Montgomery, Alabama where she started a new life and went to the University of Texas, Austin majoring in journalism. After getting her degree at the University of Texas, she moved on to writing for the Orange County, California newspaper The Register in where she wrote about Little Saigon, a Vietnamese community. She earned her masters at NYU in fine arts and teaches at Parsons the New School for Design.
In , Lai started an organization for Viet Kids where they donate and raise money for bikes for children. She is now a well known young adult and children’s author having written three books, Butterfly Yellow, Listen, Slowly, and Inside Out and Back Again. She has won several awards for her novels including the National Book Award and the Newbery Honor. She now resides in New York with her husband, daughter, and dog, Pico, who insists on typing on keyboard while she writes.

Thanhha Lai (Vietnamese: Lai T. Thanh Hà; born January 1, ) is a Vietnamese-American writer of children's literature. She won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature[1][2] and a Newbery Honor[3] for her debut novel, Inside Out & Back Again, which was published by HarperCollins.
Personal life
[edit]Lai was born in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), on January 1, She has six older brothers. Ten years later, she fled Vietnam during the Fall of Saigon, with her family. She then moved to Alabama and graduated from University of Texas, Austin with a degree in journalism in , and worked for about two years for the Orange County, California newspaper The Register, covering news about Little Saigon, the local Vietnamese community. She earned a Master of Fine Arts from New York University and moved to New York, where she teaches at Parsons The New School for Design. Today, she goes by Thanhhà Lại on her website and lives in Croton-on-Hudson.[4][5]
