After the BBC broadcast the hurling and Gaelic football finals last year, there were many people at home and abroad wondering why the sports weren’t professional - especially after seeing the level of athleticism and the standard of the players.
Gaelic sports in Ireland have remained amateur, however, there is more and more commitment being required from players with no financial reward or compensation.
Kayleigh Cronin shared that while players are dedicating more time to their sport, the fact that it has remained amateur is incredibly important.

She told RSVP Live: “From the bottom of my heart I hope it doesn’t turn professional. I think you’ll ruin everything that is good about it and the community side of it. The commitment is bonkers, but if you don’t want to do it, don’t.
“What I would love to see is that at the end of the year, when I finish playing, I think a realistic goal is to not be out of pocket. That is a target that I hope is achievable.
