Faith leaders urge honest recounting of American history and attention to MLK’s words on national holiday
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Faith leaders urged people to confront America’s history and Rev. Martin Luther King’s many critiques of it during an event Monday honoring the late civil rights leader.
Greater Cleveland Congregations held an MLK Day panel discussion at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church featuring leaders of several faith groups. The panel, titled “Where Do We Go From Here: Community or Chaos?” featured Rev. Dr. Lisa Goods of Shiloh Baptist Church, Rabbi Joshua Caruso of Congregation Mishkan Or, Pastor Vikki Pruitte-Sorrells of Lee Heights Community Church and Dean Bernard Owens of Trinity Cathedral.
The event included prayer, song, dance and readings of Martin Luther King Jr.’s quotes, alongside the panel discussion.
Before the panel discussion, Rev. Jawanza Colvin of Olivet gave a speech in which he spoke against the “Santa Clausification” of the late civil rights leader. Powerful institutions, Colvin said, have been “disemboweling” King’s words, watering down their meaning to be less threatening to corporations, politicians and other power structures.
“We have to reclaim the prophetic vision of Dr. King,” Colvin said.

Susan Reis has been a member of GCC since its inception. She is currently a member of Temple Mishkan Or. She lives in Shaker Heights with her husband, Barry, and has four adult children. As a GCC member, she has chaired the management team ( to present), served as a Tri-chair of EngageGCC ( to present), been a member of the Pre-Trial Justice Team, served as a neighborhood captain, been a member of the Battle for Democracy, and worked on the Industrial Area Foundation’s National Gun Safety Consortium. Outside of GCC, she’s also active with the National Council of Jewish Women, Rekindle, which works to improve Black-Jewish relations, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, and the Shaker Democratic Club.
