A Chinese Biographical Dictionary/Chang Fu
Chang Fu 張輔. (T. 文弼). A.D. 1375—1449. A general in the service of the third Emperor of the Ming dynasty, by whom, after conquering the west of China, he was employed in the subjugation of Tongking and Annam. In A.D. 1407 be defeated the Annamite troops in a great battle, — the first occasion on which the use of firearms for warfare is mentioned in Chinese history. In 1411 he further inflicted a crushing defeat on the forces of the Tongkingese. For these brilliant achievements he was ennobled, ultimately as Duke. In 1427 he was honoured with the title of Grand Preceptor, and in 1438 he received a salary for preparing the biography of the Emperor Hsüan Tsung. In 1449 he accompanied the Emperor Ying Tsung on his ill-fated campaign against the Wara or Oirad, and perished in the battle in which his master was captured. He was canonised as 忠烈, and received the title of Prince.

Hongfu (simplified Chinese: 红拂; traditional Chinese: 紅拂; pinyin: Hóngfú; lit. 'Red Sleeves') is a legendary Chinese folk heroine from imperial China whose birth name was Zhang Chuchen (張出塵, alternatively 張初塵). She was purported to have lived during the Transition from Sui to Tang and was originally described in Biography of the Dragon-Beard Man from the Tang dynasty.[1] She was a courtesan in the family of Sui dynasty minister Yang Su and eloped with Li Jing, an ally and future general of future Tang emperor Li Shimin. Hongfu, along with Li Jing and the "Dragon Beard Man," Qiu Ranke, are known as the "Three Heroes of the Wind and Dust" (風塵三俠). She was one of the few female martial arts masters.

[edit]Born Zhang Chuchen, her parents were from southern China who migrated north to Chang'an in the unification wars of the Sui dynasty.[citation needed] Zhang became a courtesan in the family of Sui minister Yang Su,[3] where s
