Inferences drawn while reading are much like inferences drawn in everyday life. If your best friend comes from a job interview and looks utterly miserable, you would probably infer the interview was not a success. Drawing inferences while you read requires exactly the same willingness to look at the evidence and come to a conclusion that has not been expressed in words.

Langston Hughes (1902-1967) is best known for writing poems like "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" or "Harlem." Hughes has also written plays, nonfiction, and short stories such as "Early Autumn." The latter originally appeared in the Chicago Defender on September 30, 1950, and was later included in his 1963 collection, Something in Common and Other Stories. It has also been featured in a collection called The Short Stories of Langston Hughes, edited by Akiba Sullivan Harper.
