Born November 23, 1953 in Voorburg, Holland, received his musical education at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague, where he studied band conducting and trombone. After his graduation Johan de Meij gained an international reputation as an arranger of the classical as well as the popular repertoire. His first composition for symphonic band, the Symphony no. 1 The Lord of the Rings, after Tolkien had its very successful first performance in Brussels (1988) and was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition 1989 in Chicago. In November 1990 the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. For the International Festival in Uster (Switzerland, September 1989) he wrote the symphonic poem Loch Ness, and for fanfare band the work Pentagram, commissioned by the Frysk Fanfare Festival 1990. His third work for symphonic band is called Aquarium (opus 5), commissioned by the Dutch Composers Fund. De Meij's Symphony no. 2 The Big Apple (a New York Symphony) was composed between October 1991 and August 1993, and was commissioned and premiered by The United States Air Force Band (Washington D.C.). Johan de Meij (Voorburg, 1953) studied trombone and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Music at The Hague. He has earned international fame as a composer and arranger. His catalogue consists of original compositions, symphonic transcriptions and arrangements of film scores and musicals.
The Symphony no. 1 The Lord of the Rings, based on Tolkien's best-seller novels of the same name, was his first substantial composition for symphonic band and received the prestigious Sudler Composition Award in 1989. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. His other larger compositions, such as Symphony no. 2 The Big Apple, T-Bone Concerto (for trombone and wind orchestra) and Casanova (for violoncello and wind orchestra) are also on the repertoire of the better bands all over the world. Casanova was awarded the First Prize at the International Composition Competition of Corciano in 1999, and a year later, De Meij won the Oman International Composition Prize with The Red Tower.
In March 2006, his Symphony No. 3 Planet Earth saw its world premiere, with the Noord Nederlands Orkest under the direction of Otto Tausk. It has received critical praise and the wind orchestra version has been awarded 2nd prize in the International Composition
